More from the lonely beaches of Long Hai: Memories of Vietnam 1965 1975
Long Hai was frankly a rather poor fishing village, with the housing of the local Vietnamese fishermen not much more than shacks. The few hotels were from another era but as I have said virtually devoid of visitors. The hills above the village were infested with Vietcong who were in turn bomarded by B52's which resulted in most of the glass windows in the hotels being shattered. One day teaching my girlfriend how to drive on what must once have been a car park a couple of American ground attack fighters practised dive bombing on us. Not actually firing anything but just adding to the general atmosphere of jitters.
