There was another form of motorised cyclo as seen in the picture. The old chinese powered rickshaw had disappeared from Asia years before as it was deemed humiliating. Along with the word coolie.
The pedal powered cyclo was an absolutely necessary part of Saigon's transport.
This motorised version however was polluting and I considered highly dangerous. I rarely used them.
Years later I was to know a certain Mrs Contento who ran an English language school. The battle-axe Scots missionary used to use one to travel between her home in Cholon and Saigon. I always found it strange.
