The ruined streets of Cholon. 1968
More scenes in black and white from Cholon in that year of 1968.
The fire service had an almost impossible task trying to put out the fires caused in large part by the United States bombing.
It was said that in street to street fighting a small group of Viet Cong would open fire on the South Vietnamese (ARVN) or US forces. Then they would blast their way into the apartment or house next door and continue from there. Each VC carrying a small, one pound, charge of explosive. In that way a small group of about three VC or so would hold up a large force of the enemy and eventually oblige the ARVN tanks to destroy a whole street of apartment blocks or terraced houses.
