An old friend. Sadly he died a few years ago.
Jim McCormack. My compatriot at Phan Thiet in 1968.
The empty beer cans signify it was the only thing we had to drink there being no water as our source had been destroyed.
The Decca Navigator site looks rather depressing. It was after all a small military base on an airfield. Perpetual dust but thanks to the sea breeze no humidity and the temperature quite bearable.
The town was known for its production of Nuoc Mam if not necesarily for the quality of the product the best coming from Phu Quoc.
No social life because of the war. Girl friends left behind in Saigon. Before 1968 life had been relatively peaceful there and the personnel had lived down town. In 1968 it was difficult to say which was the more dangerous.
