Damaged Chinook. Phan Thiet, Vietnam, 1968
A Chinook being taken away after being damaged in a rocket attack.
That night the VC had gone out to sea with the local fishing boats and had fired RPG 41 rockets at the camp. Our billets were by the cliff overlooking the sea. One rocket exploded near to where I was standing. I was so shook up that all the other people who had been inside the building playing cards made it into our new bunker before me. The lit up window must have made a nice target. Good shot really. They only missed by a few yards.
We then realized we had no arms with us so I had to go back and get them. Shortly after another Englishman who had been off somewhere else arrived with a case of beer. I don’t think he was too sober. Far too relaxed.
A GI shot himself. Jumping out of his truck to take cover the trigger of his M16 caught in something and he put most of a magazine into his chest.
