A dinner party. Saigon. 1960s. Memories of Vietnam
Guests at dinner in my Saigon home. All older women sitting together at one table. All men sitting together at another. How strange. I was rather obliged to go by custom. Certainly these rules did not apply to the younger generation. In Vietnam though one was obliged to respect the wishes of older people.
There was a very beautiful laquer painting on the wall at the end of the table. Unfortunately not visible in the photo. It had been painted by my wife when she was studying at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Saigon. It was stolen when my house was ransacked at the fall of Saigon in 1975. Of course the table and chairs in the photo were pillaged also. The loss of that laquer painting however has always left me vey embittered.
