I always took the contrast between war and peace quite naturally. There was a ban on dancing. I know of a few occasions when it took place behind drawn curtains and subdued music. The only people who totally ignored the ban were the pilots of the South Vietnames Air Force so I heard. These were under the patronage of the flamboyant Vice President, Nguyen Kao Ky, a former pilot.
This photo is of guests of mine at a dinner party in Saigon in 1969. In contrast to the older generation where the men and women often sat at different tables the younger members of the upper class were quite modern in their outlook to life, at least outside the immediate family circle.
