Living on base. Memories of Vietnam

During my first few years South Vietnam I worked on military bases. These were usally very small. Sometimes with a battalion or two of ARVN on them, sometimes US froces as in Phan Thiet where there were some 101st Airborne division troops. Nothing ever very large thank heaven, with the exception of the Tan Son Nhut airbase in Saigon. I rarely worked there. I am rather allergic to sprawling military bases and would never have been able to stay on them working for more than a few hours.
As it was sometimes I was able to live of base when not on duty. That depended rather on how long I might be based there, and the security and girlfriend situation. We usually worked on a twenty four hour shift with forty eight hours off. Military rations got boring after a week. From time to time the camps would get shot up and our accomodation would suffer as in above photos.
