The peasants had a hard life; and that was without the war. I remember reading once that a dastardly Viet Cong attack had been foiled and the South Vietnamese army, ARVN, had not fallen into their trap. Two young boys drove their heard of buffaloes into a field and set off a string of land mines. The buffaloes and two boys were all killed but it was a victory for the South Vietnamese. What struck me in the article was that there was not one word of sympathy for the boys, let alone the poor buffaloes which were doubtless the livelyhood of the family.
