South Vietnamese soldiers. Memories of Phan Thiet. Vietnam

Posted by PicasaA group of South Vietnamese soldiers standing on a bridge in Phan Thiet in 1968.
The QC on the helmet of one means Military Police. The Red beret is a parachutist.
These were mostly friendly types I often bumped into in the town during the fighting that Spring. Known as ARVN or The Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Badly paid. I heard once an American corporal was paid more than a Vietnamese colonel. How true I don't know. I do know however when the French arrived in Vietnam the lowest paid French functionary was paid more than the highest paid Vietnamese even if the latter had a doctorate.
