Regional Forces. Memories of Phan Thiet, Vietnam.
This photo of two South Vietnamese soldiers was taken in Phan Thiet in 1968. Behind them is the river which divides the town. The soldier facing the camera is a member of the Regional Forces which were used only within the province they were recruited from. The other soldier is of an unspecified unit with the regular army. When defending their homes and families they fought well, but this lack of being able to move them around sometimes caused problems. Looking back though I imagine it would have been over used and the South Vietnamese men spent too long under arms as it was.
