A lone soldier. Phan Thiet 1968. Memories of Vietnam
Going through my photos I came across this one. The colours seem strange, something to do with shadow, but most to do with ageing. It was taken in Phan Thiet during the fighting there in 1968. He is obviously a Regional Force soldier. There are some soldiers at the end of the street which seems to have been blocked off to its inhabitants. I often found myself walking or sometimes driving down absolutely deserted roads. Roads or streets or whatever are just never empty in Vietnam.
The reason I'm showing it is to demonstrate the gulf that existed between this soldier and the people at the reception in the previous post. If I could drift from one world to the other and be quite happy in both he was stuck in his own.
