In Search of Vietnam. Memories of Vietnam
There was at times an utter peace to be found. Not often and at least during the war generally only in the more isolated and therefore most dangerous places.
The term of Thomas Hardy comes to mind. "Far from the madding crowd." The Vietnamese liked each other's company, houses were overcrowded, good restaurants or cafés were overcrowded. I like animated crowds, but all in there proper place. It was perhaps this inability to be alone when I wanted to that often played havoc with my nerves.
It is perhaps why when on those rare occasions I did find a haven of peace it was so lovely.
