An eternal tranquility. Memories of Vietnam
This photo symbolises for me a complete and utter tranquility. It has always been a wonder to me why the Vietnamese have been such a warlike people, because warlike they certainly are. Probably the explanation is simple. Just no desire to be absorbed by China or by any other nation for that matter. Their descent southwards over the centuries was perhaps just as much a matter of escaping Chinese domination as to conquer new lands. Were the Chams and Cambodians and various Montagnard peoples just so much collateral damage then?
